The Future of Gaming: Xbox's Place in the Developer's World
In a recent survey, the Xbox Series X|S has emerged as the fifth most appealing platform for developers, sparking curiosity and debate. But here's the twist: it's not all about the console's popularity.
The GDC Festival Gaming organizers released their 'State of the Game Industry Report' for 2026, surveying over 2,300 industry professionals. Among the insights, the Xbox Series X and S ranked fifth, capturing the interest of 20% of developers. PC topped the list with an impressive 80%, followed by PS5 at 40%, Steam Deck at 40%, and Nintendo Switch 2 at 39%.
And this is where it gets interesting: the Xbox One, ROG Xbox Ally, and Xbox Cloud Gaming also made the list, albeit with lower percentages. The Ally and Cloud Gaming, which run PC and console games respectively, garnered 7% and 5% of the vote, while Xbox One secured 9%.
A separate poll revealed that 40% of the surveyed developers had recently shipped products on Xbox Series X and S, compared to 47% for PS5 and a significant 83% for PC. Additionally, 23% of developers shipped on Xbox One.
Now, let's address some caveats. The survey's results are based on a relatively small sample size of just over 2,000 people, which may not represent the entire gaming industry. Furthermore, developers don't create games specifically for the ROG Xbox Ally or Xbox Cloud Gaming, so it's understandable that these platforms didn't attract much interest.
As for the Series X and S, the results could be influenced by weaker console sales in recent years. However, if Microsoft integrates Windows into the next Xbox console, as rumored, it could be a game-changer for developers and players alike. Imagine being able to play all those PC exclusives!
