After the devastating impact of Hurricane Milton, which left the stadium roofless and interior damaged, the city of Tampa is working tirelessly to restore Tropicana Field to its former glory. And they're confident they'll hit a home run for the Rays' home opener.
Here's the scoop: Hurricane Milton, which hit in October 2024, caused extensive damage to the iconic Tropicana Field. The roof was torn off, and water intrusion wreaked havoc inside. But the city has been swift in its response, allocating a whopping $59.7 million for the renovation project.
And this is where it gets impressive: Over a year of hard work and a quarter million man hours have gone into replacing the roof and repairing water-damaged areas. City officials are optimistic, assuring the public that the stadium will be ready for the Rays' first home game on April 6.
"It's been a whirlwind of activity," said Beth Herendeen from the City of St. Petersburg, describing the rapid progress once the new roof was in place. "From drywall to paint, we're transforming the stadium back into a baseball haven."
But here's where it gets controversial: While the city has received FEMA reimbursements of $16.5 million and insurance payouts of $10.8 million, with another $2.7 million expected from the state, there's still a lot to be done. Construction crews are working on outfield padding, drywall, carpet replacement, and team locker rooms. Will they meet the deadline?
As the home opener approaches, the stadium is taking shape. The new net is up, data cables are laid, and the audio system is ready. The $1.3 million artificial turf is nearly complete, and air quality tests are underway to ensure fan safety.
"Water damage was extensive in some areas, but we're addressing it all," Herendeen added.
With the clock ticking, the city promises a grand reopening. The Rays are set to face the Chicago Cubs on April 6, and fans are eager to see if the stadium will be game-ready. Will the city pull off this massive renovation? Only time will tell.
