The story of Mackenzie Coupland's journey into the world of professional cycling is a testament to her grit, determination, and natural talent. Coupland, a 20-year-old from Australia, has seamlessly transitioned from the Continental level to the WorldTour, capturing the attention of the cycling world with her impressive performances. Her journey is not just about winning races; it's about the lessons she's learned, the challenges she's overcome, and the unique perspective she brings to the sport.
A Smooth Transition to the WorldTour
Coupland's transition to the WorldTour has been remarkably smooth. She attributes this to the supportive environment provided by her team, Liv AlUla Jayco. Despite the step up in competition, she feels right at home, thanks to the seamless transition facilitated by her team.
"I think on the team side of things, it actually felt very similar [to the Continental level]. I think they made the transition very easy for me. I did have a lot more sorted out coming back this time around, so I was a lot less stressed. I think everything was just a lot easier. Moving into this new place I'm in at the moment just took off so much stress," she shared.
The Pressure of Representing Australia
One of the most significant changes Coupland has experienced is the pressure of representing Australia. Wearing the national jersey has both increased her visibility and heightened her sense of responsibility. She finds herself under more scrutiny, but also receives more respect from her peers.
"I really had to think about how to move a lot more sensibly. Usually I like to just go full gas; I like to be on the attacking side of things. And I think it's a little bit harder now that I'm wearing a national jersey. I can't quite hide in the bunch as much now, and I'm not so sneaky anymore," she explained.
Learning to Manage Expectations
Coupland's success in Spain, where she won the Vuelta a Extremadura Femenina, has been a significant confidence booster. However, she remains grounded, understanding that the Classics present a different set of challenges.
"I definitely gained a lot of confidence from that. But I think also the racing is very different from that race to the Classics. So I was also still very unsure how I'd go in the Classics. I had a lot of wiggle room and it was just kind of 'see how I go' in the Classics," she noted.
The Importance of Team Support
The support of her team has been crucial to Coupland's success. She particularly enjoyed the role of a leader in Spain, something she hadn't had the opportunity to do before. The camaraderie and shared goals within the team have made her racing experience more enjoyable.
"It was really nice being back with the [Liv AlUla Jayco] Continental team and with the sport director I had for the previous two years. And I think I performed my best TT I ever had. Everything went to plan, I felt good – it was just, I think, a miracle TT," she recalled.
The Challenge of the Classics
The Classics have presented Coupland with a unique set of challenges. She has managed to stand out in the bunch, thanks to her natural talent and the respect she commands. However, the pressure of high-profile races has been a learning curve for her.
"I think it has been a bit harder, but then it's also been nice. I'm getting a lot of respect in the bunch as well, but I think it's also now that I'm racing in the WorldTour there is a lot more respect and everyone respects everyone's space a lot more than in the Conti bunch. So it's a lot more comfortable," she shared.
Looking Ahead
As Coupland looks ahead to the future, she remains focused on her goals. She is eager to continue learning and growing, both as a rider and as a person. Her journey is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and a supportive team.
"I feel like it hasn't changed too much [stepping up to the WorldTour]. I think it's more the kind of attention that I'm getting. I'm just getting a little bit more attention and a lot more support from home now. And I'm doing bigger races now, so I think that, for myself, there was a lot more pressure, but I think it's a good kind of pressure. It's more excitement as well. It's very different in that way," she concluded.
In my opinion, Coupland's story is a fascinating one, filled with lessons and insights that can inspire aspiring cyclists and sports enthusiasts alike. Her journey is a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and a supportive team, and it's a story that deserves to be told and celebrated.
