While a catchy name certainly helps, the story of GayC/DC is about so much more. Meet Chris Freeman, the American musician who, along with his bandmates, embarked on a journey to pay tribute to their musical heroes with a unique twist.
"We started with an all-gay tribute to The Go-Go's, calling ourselves The Gay-Gays," Freeman recalls. But when The Go-Go's announced their final tour, the band faced a crossroads. "We thought, let's take this as a sign and call it quits too," he adds.
And yet, the magic of being in a band, the chaos, and the camaraderie were too hard to resist. So, the idea of GayC/DC was born, with a playful twist on the iconic AC/DC name.
"One of us started playing Back in Black, and we thought, why not GayC/DC?" Freeman explains.
But this isn't just a joke band. GayC/DC is a labor of love, built on genuine admiration for Australia's rock legends. Every member is a true believer, knowing that any AC/DC tribute will be scrutinized by die-hard fans.
"From the start, we knew the music had to be top-notch," Freeman says. "We spent six months perfecting our sound because, while AC/DC may sound simple, it's deceptively complex."
Their dedication paid off. GayC/DC's shows are an explosion of sound, joy, and outrageousness, a bold step into unknown territories.
"Every show is a surprise," Freeman admits. "We never know who's in the audience, who we need to win over. We use humor as our secret weapon to sweeten the deal."
And it works! GayC/DC routinely converts skeptics into euphoric fans.
"When we tour the US, we often face folded arms and skepticism at first," drummer Brian Welch says. "But by the end of the show, those same people are at the front, singing along and thanking us."
Despite their irreverent stage presence, GayC/DC's devotion to AC/DC is unwavering.
"We never mock AC/DC or their music. We worship them; their influence runs deep in our veins," Welch emphasizes.
Chris Freeman, a bona fide punk icon, is no stranger to breaking barriers. His band, Pansy Division, was a trailblazing punk act in the early 1990s, unapologetically queer in a scene dominated by macho aggression.
"Pansy Division kicked open doors for gay musicians to be themselves," Welch acknowledges.
While audiences today are more open-minded, GayC/DC understands the skepticism some AC/DC purists might feel towards their queer reinterpretation.
"If you don't like our look or song titles, that's fine," Welch says. "But let's talk about our shared love for AC/DC after the show. There's common ground there."
And sometimes, the tables turn. GayC/DC not only converts AC/DC purists but also creates new fans who never connected with the band before.
"We've had people tell us they came for the gay element or Pansy Division, but left as AC/DC fans," Freeman shares.
